COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT THROUGH WOMEN'S LEADERSHIP

Introduction

IRDWSI/WIDA started its operations of Gangarajpur panchayat block through community development. Through women's leadership. the project area is inhibited by 80% of Tribals. The problems of hunger, starvation. ill health, malnutrition and environmental degradation are the grim realities of the region and to identify the rot causes along with the people has become the project strategy.

The project began its work in the year of 1997 in 10 villages of Gangarajpur panchayath. Pottangi. During the visit of Stromme foundation. the team suggested that to cover all the villages in the same panchayath of Gangarajpur. basing on the suggestion the project selected 10 more villages to cover the population 1083 with community organization and health, women. skills and technology and environment. at present the organization is working in 20 villages covering the population 2601. the major focus will be in the new villages on social education, organization, health and literacy. the organization is also focused on leadership. local issues, natural resources development skills and technology development. micro credit, and panchayath network.

Issues

 During the last three months the people raised different issues on teacher, landless issue, demanding government waste land, wages, women and family issues on domestic violence, forest, government pension and drinking water in all the 20 villages.

Government Coordination

8 Persons from three villages received agriculture assistance and technical consultancy
One village drinking water well was given
In two villages land was demarcated
In one village fish culture assistance and technical support was given.
World food programme was given to four villages.
One tube well was repaired in one village Chintalguda
One tube well was given to Bodogam Village.

Coordination

The staff will meet once in a month and discuss about the date wise programme, village wise programme, issue based and government programme. Once in a week, a coordination meeting will be organized and discussed too coordinate the programmes in the village through the staff volunteers and cadres. The cadre, leader and staff are given training in planning and implementation of programme. They are also attended. To different meetings conducted by government and NGOs, workshops and training programmes.
