Following
the super cyclone in the year 1999 and the severe drought in the
year 2000, the third misfortune of the Orissa people is the floods
in July 2001 that playing havoc with the lives of the people and
their survival livelihood resources. There seems to be no end
to the people's worries as torrential rains continue to lash the
State and the release of waters from Hirakud Dam and other barrages
in July 2001. Less than two years
after a cyclone wrecked Orissa, a trail of devastation has been
left by floods that affected more than five million people in
the State.
The
recent flood affected 24 districts of the State such as Angul,
Balasore, Bargarh, Bhadrak, Balangir, Boudh, Cuttack, Deogarh,
Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Jagatsinghpur, Jharsuguda, Kalahandi, Kendrapara,
Khurdha, Koraput, Nawarangpur, Nayagarh, Nuapada, Puri, Rayagada,
Sambalpur, Sonepur and Sundargarh. The following are the other

Nayagarh
is one of the worst affected districts among the other districts
mentioned above. The assistance of ACT/UELCI for immediate relief
operation to the needy flood victims was timely and catered to
the urgent needs of the flood victims. The implementing partners
set up field camps and took up relief operations on war footing.
